Sexes a l i k e : lores, a line extending below the eyes, and one above them down the sides
of t h e neck yellowish white (pure white in some specimens); upper plumage shining blueblack
; wings and tail dull black ; rump and edges of the feathers of the quills, wing-coverts,
and tail rich golden-yellow; throat white; under surface pale yellow; bill black; hides
brown; legs and feet lead-coloured. Length 3"-7o, wing 2", tail l"-35.
The young bird has the under surface dirty greenish yellow.
Hah. West Africa: Fernando Po (Fraser); Gaboon (Gujon); banks of the Moonda
river (Du Chaillu); Fantee (Sharpe); river Volta (JJssher); Aguapim (Bus).
This species has for its distinctive characteristic the rump and edges of the wing- and
tail-feathers golden-yellow; this colouring separates it from B. bilineata and B. subsulphurea,
to which it is closely allied.
The Yellow-bellied Barbet was first described by Mr. Fraser, who gives the following
account in a paper laid before the Zoological Society in 18-13 :—
