Since the commencement o f Si#i work I have been allowed by my Publishers to give an
additional series o f plates representing the skulls and teeth of British mammals. These 1 have
entrusted to Mr. H. GrSnvold, an artist whose special work in craniology could scarcely be
excelled. T o him the execution o f these pictures has been a labour o f lo v e ; the accuracy and
finish of each are sufficient proof o f the ability o f the artist Mr. Gronvold has been favoured by
the advice and criticism o f such experts as Dr. Forsyth Major, of the British Museum, and Dr.
Andersen, o f CopenhagenjBjo them my best thanks are due. T he skulls and teeth are those of
typical animals and are drawn to sca le ; some are figured for the first time. My readers, whether
scientific or otherwise, will be able to identify any species by means o f Mr. GrSnvold's beautiful
drawings.
