pure yellow variety of the Irish Hare has been frequently noticed. Mr. Whitaker,
however, possesses one, and for some time kept a pure albino, which proved a
most charming pet. Those who desire a detailed account of most of the Brown
Hare varieties that have been shot will find a very complete one in Mr. Harting’s
article on the Hare in the ‘ Encyclopaedia of Sport,’ p. 503.
Brown Hares and skins are not used in the fur trade to such an extent as
they used to be, although many thousands find their way to the London market.
Fleming1 tells us that in Scotland the skins were formerly ‘ collected by itinerant
dealers, and annually sold in the February market at Dumfries, sometimes to the
amount of 30,000.’
