The historic ‘ quhit bulles ’ of Cumbernauld (Stirling) and Kincardine, mentioned
by Boece (1527), Bishop Leslie (1578), and Monipennie (1597), ^ they were not
entirely destroyed by the Regent Lennox in 1570 may have had some connection
with the Cadzow herd, whose origin is unknown. It is likely, however, that the
herds of Cadzow, Chillingham, Naworth, and Drumlanrig were all driven in from
the main body of semi-wild cattle roaming the great Caledonian Wood in the
time of Henry III.
Cally Deer P a r k , K i r k c u d b r i g h t s h i r e .— John McDiarmid, in describing1
Cally Park, speaks of the ‘ inclosures peopled with numerous flocks of red and fallow
deer, and a race of cattle that is nearly extinct. The wild or ancient kine of Scotland,
cream all over, save the nose and ears, which, in each specimen, are as black as jet.’
As regards the origin of the Cally herd Dr. Murray states2 that they came from
Hamilton, and infers that the introduction was recent. Mr. Robert Service tells
us8 that in 1846 most of the deer were sold, ‘ the Wild Cattle being disposed of at
the same time.’
