approved authorities,’ (whence this work is alfo termed Jama Saheeh, or
the approved compilation,) compofed by Y eesoo Mohammed B in
Y esoo al Termazi, about A. H. 260. It is related that the author,
before publication, fent copies -of his work to all the principal profellors
in Arabia and Perjia, each of whom expreffed his approbation of it in. the
higheft terms. Many other works have been written ôn the fame fub-.

T h e Jama Saghder,or fmall compilation, is alfo a work upon the fame

This treatife is highly efteemed ; and many commentaries have been
written upon it, in Turkey, Africa, Arabia, ' Perjia, and India.— Thefe
four worksare frequently cited, by the compiler o f the TIED A T A , under
the compfehénfive term of Zàhir al Rawàyat, or The letter o f Reports* ;
and his -book confifts chiefly o f a compendious extract from thefe. T h e Na-
wadir, or curiofties, is a title bellowed upon a digeft of Four other compilations
o f traditions and law reports, Thefe compilations are not -fup-
pofed to be pofleffed of the fame‘authority with the Zàhir al Rawàyat,
and are therefore, by the commentators, diftitiguilhed.under the Read of

times limply termed Kadooree).takes its title from the patronymic, appellation

He died A.. H. 65.— A bdoola Ibn MasaoiS®, alfo known by .the name
Aboo A bbulkibman Abdoola al HazJee, joined the Prophet almofl:
at the. commencement of his pretended million'; led his difciples, in their
retreat to Ethiopia, upon the perfecution of the Koreish ; and afterwards
repaired to him; at Medina. He died A . H. 44, intitled, for his eminent
knowledge o f the Koran, and the precepts of the Prophet, faj-al-Shirra,
ox the diadem o f the law.— Hassan, furnamed Bakhtaree, was an eminent
teacher of the law. He was a native ©i Khorafan, whence he takes his
appellation, Bakter being the name anciently bellowed on that region,
becaufe of its relative fituation, as it fignifies the eaft,— whence the ancients
termed the.fame territory BaBriana.— Ibn a l K H A S A F , furnamed
Aboo Behr Aimed, was an eminent adherent-to the fe& o f Haneefa ; and
wrote a treatife under the. fame title as that of A boo-Yoosaf; already
mentioned, and upon the fame fubjeft, (the duties o f a magiftrate,) in
which all the doctrines o f his-leader are exemplified and fupported by
argumeut.-— Aboo Jaeir Hindoomee takes his appellation from the place
o f his birth, Mindooan,. a quarter or ward of the city, of Balkh, the
