h a lf the failing charges. On her Mr Cunningham, a fur-
veyor, is' appointed, and both he and the vefiel are entirely
under your direction, and they are to receive, from time to
time, fuch inftruitions as you may judge neceiTary. The
Suez pacquet is a fmall fchooner equipped for the purpofe
o f attending the Bengal Merchant in the rnoft difficult parts
o f the navigation ; and as ffie cannot be further ufeful after
your return from Suez to Mocha, we defire ffie. may be
fold there, where frequently fmall velfels fell to advantage.
“ O n your leaving the pilot, you w ill make the beft o f
your way, with the other two veflels under your charge, to
the Malabar coaft, and touch at Anjango and Cochin, tak
in g in there coir, hawfers, arid water, or any thing you
may ftand in need of, and without lofs o f time proceed dire
ft to. Mocha. On your arrival there you mult make inquiry
if any pilots are come down from S u e z ; ffiould none
be arrived, lofe as little time as poffible, and proceed up a-
bove Jidda to Yambo, provided you hear no unfavourable
accounts from Suez, fuch as war, or any commotipns at
Cairo,

H I f fuch accounts are rumoured at Mocha, trace them fo
as to be fully-fatisfied there is foundation for them, and
i f you have good authority to credit the reports propagated,
and are certain they are not fpread with a view to difcourage
your proceeding, in thatcafe we advife your proceeding to
Jidda as moft for the'intereft o f the concerned. At Jidda
you will deliver the j cultomary letters to the baffia and
ffierriffe, and, without taking notice of. any farther projedf,
difpbfe o f your cargo, as the artkfes a re all o f the proper,
afibrtment fbr that market, and we defire, in that cafe, you
collect your returns as expeditiou-fly as poffible ; and i f you
find any confiderable freight for Bombay, and the feafon
will admit your going there from Mocha, fo as to arrive in
Bengal by the middle -of Oftober, in that cafe you w ill
purchafe a cargo o f cotton, and proceed here direftly.
Whatever filver you may have after the purchafe o f the
cotton, you w ill pay into -the Company’s treafary for bills
on this prdidcncy. If you cannot procure a good freight'
at Jidda for Bombay, we defire you will proceed from Mocha
to the coaft o f Coromandel, and touch at Negapatnam,
where letters w ill be lodged for you.
41 On your, arrival at Mocha, ffiould you hear no unfa-
vourable accounts o f war, or any difturbances at Cairo, you
w ill proceed to Yambo, where you w ill again inquire i f
there are any .pilots acquainted with the paiTage to Suez.
I f you meet with any w ho, upon examination, appear capable
