WE went to the door, through the feveral apartments,
very much upon our guard, for there was no per-
fon |o light us out, and we were afraid o f fome treachery
■ or ambulh in the antichamber and dark paffages ; but we
met nobody; and Were, even at the outer gate, obliged to
open the door ourfelves. Without the gate there were a-
bout twenty people gathered together, but none o f them
with arms ; and, by the h a lf words and expreffions they
made ufe of, we could judge they were not the Shekh’s
friends. They followed us fo r a little, but difperfed before
we^arrived at our houfe. Soliman, m y fervant, told me by
the way, that the Moullah was arrived, and that the Shekh o f
Bey la’s
Beyla’s fervant* who had come with hint, had been at m y
houfe ever 'fince I went to Eidele’s. Accordingly we found
him ftill there, and explained to him w h a t had happened,
-and the great diilrei's we had been in from the Moullah s
not arriving fooner, as alfo from receiving no meffage either
from Sennaar or-Ras el Feel. He told-us, the reafon o f our
fervants not>joining us was the falfe information his m a tter
the ; Shekh-of Beyla had received from Fidele ; that we
Were com in g -by-the Dender, and not by Teawa, as already
mentioned. He now ad-vifed us to come up, and fliew ourfelves
in the morning to the Moullah, who would be fitting
with Shekh Fidele, adminiftering juftice; but to take no particular
notice o f him, and only obferve to what his difcourfe
pointed, and he would bring us-word if any thing more was
neccllary.
I recommended to this fervant o f the Shekh o f Beysa
that he Ihould tell the-Moullah that he was not to expect
I was to open my baggage here, but that I was a
man who underftood perfectly the'value o f a favour done
me, and Ihould not be in his debt longer than arriving at
Beyla, which-I wilhed to reach as foon as polhble; nothing
can be quicker -than-thefe people are on the fmalleft hint
given ; we feparated, fu lly fatisfied -that we -were now a
fufficient-match for-the Shekh, even at his ow n weapons.
- E v e r linee the adventure o f the Shekh o f thejehaina, one
o f us had kept guard, the door being open every night
for fear o f fire, and it was my turn that night, a poll that
I never declined, for the fake o f good example ; but my
fpirits were fo exhaufted this day, that I gave the old Turk
plenty o f coffee and tobacco to undertake, as he did with
