“ G e n t l e m e n ,
T h e proprietors o f the Suez Adventure having made
choice o f you to conduft the undertaking, it is our
duly as managers to give you the neceffary inftrudtions.
Inclofed you will receive invoice and bills o f loading o f
the cargo, and likewife o f the freight loading on the Bengal
Merchant, on account and rifk o f the concerned, which you
are to difpofe o f in the g u lf o f Mocha, Jidda, or Suez, on
the moil advantageous terms, obfeiving at the fame time,
as nearly as poffible, the following inftrudtions:
“ As many unforefeen accidents may happen that we
cannot guard againft, and as the proprietors have placed in
us an implicit confidence, we now delegate to you, Gentlemen,
full power and authority to conduit and manage
tins new undertaking, for which your credit, as well

as ours, is en g a g ed ; and though we hope it is unneceffary
to recommend to you as an objedt o f the greateft importance,
and on which the fuccefs o f all undertakings depends, a
good undemanding and harmony between, thofe who are
to execute, w e are fatisfied that your attention to the intereft
o f the proprietors, and your own reputation, will outw
e i a h e v e r y other confideration, and that nothing w ill interrupt
that union which is fo abfolutely neceftary to infure
fuccefs in new undertakings lik e the prefent.
“ You are to draw a commiflion o f 5 per cent, on the falesv
Mr Shaw, as chief fupercargo, will draw 3, and Capt. Greig
| per cent, and on a ll freight in th e fame proportion as the
carsro. Paffengers, or other emoluments that are cuftomary,
are to be equally divided between you, and no feparate intereft
to be allowed. As it is ufual in all voyages from_this
port w h e r e th e r e is a fupercargo, to allow one-fixth o f the
cargo a s privilege, in lieu o f which 1 a,000 rupees will, be
divided between you and the officers on return o f the v e ffel.
“ M r S h a w , as chie f fupercargo, is to have the foie management
and difpofal o f the cargo, and Captain Greig to have
the entire management o f the navigation o f the veffels em-
nlbyed. At the fame time, we recommend and delire, that,
in all points which require advice in either o f the departments
you confult with each other, and that no material

fhould there be a difference in opinion, we expeft a minute
