A L TH O U G H
A l t h o u g h , thefe kings began with a very remarkable
conqueft, it does not appear they added much to their
kingdom afterwards. Ounfa, fon o f Naffer, is faid to have
firft fubdued the province o f Fazuclo. I fhall but make
three obiervations upon this lift, which is undoubtedly authentic.
The firft isT that this monarchy haying been efta-
bliihed in the 1504, it muft anfwerto the 9th year o f the
reign o f Naod in the Abyilinian annuls, as that prince began
to reign in 1495.— The fecood is, that Tecla Haimanout, the
fon o f Yafous the Great, writing to Baady el Achmer, or the
White, who was the fon o f Ounfa, about the murder o f M,
du Roule the French Ambaffador, in the beginning o f this
century, fpeaks o f the ancient friendftxip that had fubfifted
between the kings o f Abyffinia and thofe o f Sennaar, ever
fmce the reign o f Kim, whom he mentions as one o f
Baady’ s remote predeceffors on the throne o f Sennaar. Now,
in the whole lift o f kings we have juft given, we do not
find one o f the name o f K im ; nor is there one word
mentioned o f a k in g o f Sennaar, or a treaty with him,
in the whole annals o f Abyffmia, till the beginning o f
Socinios’s reign. I therefore imagine that the Kim * ,
which Tecla Haimanout informs us his predeceffors
correfponded with in ancient times, was a prince, who,
under the command o f the Caliph o f Cairowan, in the
kingdom o f Tunis in Africa, took ¡Cairo and fortified it,
b y furrounding it with a ftrong wall, and who reigned, by
•himfelf and fucceffors, too years, from 998 to h o i , when
Hadec, the daft prince o f that race, was ilain by Salidan, firft
