This species is somewhat nearly allied to 5. discolor Colebr. of which it has quite
the coiolla and has also, near ihe top of the spike, the scattered flowers. In foHacre
It, on the other hand, imitates S. oblonga Benth., a species growing at elevations of 5,000
feet in Ceylon. It has, however, a calyx which in ripe fmit is only one-third the size of
that of S. oblonffa and which is not longer even then than its pedicel, whereas the ripe
calyx of S. oblonga considerably excefids its pedicel in length. The plant now described
has proved a welcome addition to I n d i j i horticulture; its neat compact habit and its
dark green leaves with a purplish tinge beneath render it useful, particularly in planting
rockwork.
