SPECIFIC CHARACTER.

DESCRIPTION.
STEM shrubby, a foot and h a l f h i g h , and upright,
w i t h numerous small branches.
LEAVES b y fours, linear, long, and between
erect and spreading.
FLOWERS terminate the small branches, mostly
b y fours, n o d d i n g : blossom cylindrical a n d
shining, the l o w e r part o f a b r i g h t red colour,
the m o u t h green.
SEED-BUD turban-shaped and f u r r o w e d , hairy
on the upper part, and furnished at the base w i t h
h o n e y - b e a r i n g nectaries.

OUR figure was taken in 1 8 1 9 f r om plants in the H a m m e r s m i t h collection, and considered as a seminal
variety o f the E . versicolor, t h o u g h it certainly more resembles the E . hirta : but f r om these and every
other species o f E r i c a it may be always distinguished just previously to flowering, b y the empalements
f o r m i n g a terminal cone at the end o f each flower-branch of a rich deep red colour, w h i c h only separate
to a l l ow the b r i g h t green ends o f the buds to make their first approach towards maturity : it is therefore
beautiful in every stage o f inflorescence.
