SPECIFIC CHARACTER.
HEATH, w i t h beardless tips, w i t h i n the blossom :

: stem shrubby.
DESCRIPTION.
STEM shrubby, a foot or more h i g h , w i t h n u merous
thread-shaped branches.
LEAVES b y fours, spreading h o r i z o n t a l l y , short,
nearly linear, blunt-ended, w i t h bristly margins.
FLOWERS terminate the branches in one to four
flowers, n o d d i n g : blossom club-shaped, curved,
and o f a reddish colour.
SEED-BUD turban-shaped, f u r r o w e d , and f u r nished
at t he base w i t h h o n e y - b e a r i n g nectaries.

T i n s E r i c a varies considerably f r om the o r i g i n a l species, and yet retains the l e a d i ng feature o f transparency
that designates the mother plant. T h e flowers given w i t h the dissections are f r om plants
nearly allied to the white-11c wered pellucida; and b a d we been then in possession o f them, they w o u l d
have arranged better w i t h that f i g u r e ; but this o p p o r t u n i t y admits o f their being made use o f as intermediate
varieties o f flower only.
