SPECIFIC CHARACTER.
HEATH, w i t h beardless tips w i t h i n the blossom :
flowers cylindrical, hairy, and terminating the
small branches: leaves b y threes, linear.
D E S C R I P T I O N 1 .
STEM shrubby, a loot and a h a l f h i g h , upright,
and spreading : smaller branches numerous.
LEATES b y threes, linear, furrowed beneath.,
w i t h longish footstalks pressed to the branches.
FLOWERS terminate the smaller branches b y
threes; peduncles coloured, with two small floral
leaves pressed to t h em : blossom cylindrical and
h a i r y , purple at the base, and w h i t e at the upper
p a r t : segments o f the border ovate and spreadi
n g : leaves o f the empalement lance-shaped, and
pressed to the blossom.
SEED-BUD turban-shaped, furrowed, and furnished
w i t h honey-bearing nectaries at the base.

T i n s elegant plant resembles the E . L i n n a a , and is b y most cultivators as well k n o w n b y the appellation
o f the old L i n n e o i d c s as b y the specific title o f perspicua.
I t flowers early in spring, and continues in successive b l o om till late in a u t u m n . It was first raised
from ( a p e seed in the R o y a l gardens at K e w , and flowered in the nursery o f M r . W i l l i a m s at T u r n -
bam G r e e n about the year 1 7 9 6 .
