T h e Great C r e s t e d G r e b e is v e r y plentiful i n H o l l a n d and Germany,
and belongs also to Iceland, Sweden and Norway, Italy, F r a n c e , and
Russia. In Asia it has been observed about t h e Caucasus and i n Siberia,
Asia Minor and Japan. Also in Africa, both north and south. It
belongs likewise to N o r t h America, advancing southwards from the
F u r Countries, as far as Mexico, t h r o u g h the States.
This singular-looking b i r d is indigenous in many parts of the country,
videlicet, in L i n c o l n s h i r e , Norfolk, S h r o p s h i r e , and Wales. Its occurrence
has been noticed in Cumberland. In Y o r k s h i r e , one "was proc
u r e d near Doncaster, the b e g i n n i n g of 1 8 3 7 , o n e or two near Sheffield,
others at S u t t o n - o n - D e r w e n t and H o r n s e a Merc, where they used to
breed. They arc sometimes obtained in Oxfordshire, in the neighbourh
o o d of "Weston-on-thc-Grern. One in B e r k s h i r e , near Hungerford,
in F e b r u a r y , 1 8 0 8 . In H a m p s h i r e , one was seen on the Southampton
W a t e r , the end of March, 1 8 4 9 ; t h r e e shot in the winter of 18G(>-7.
