Colymbus—A Diver. Ardicus—Belonging to the Arctic regions.
T H I S beautiful Diver is common in Norway on the lakes on the
h i g h e r parts of t h e mountains, and the same remark applies to Finland,
Sweden, and Lapland. It is noticed besides in Holland, Russia,
Germany, France, Switzerland, and I t a l y ; and belongs also to Asia,
being seen in Siberia, Kamtsehatka, and J a p a n ; and in America occurs
from H u d s o n ' s Bay to the U n i t e d States, but in the latter not so
commonly as in the more n o r t h e r n districts.
A specimen of the B l a c k - t h r o a t e d Diver was killed near Furfleet,
on the T h a m e s , the 21st. of J a n u a r y , and another, a male, on Barton
P o n d , Norfolk, the end of J a n u a r y , 1850: one also, an adult male,
about the middle of J a n u a r y , 1848, on the River W e n s u m , at Taverham;
a pair on one of the Broads in the year 1833. In Essex, one at
C h c s t c r f o r d , t h e middle of J a n u a r y , 1850.
I n Y o r k s h i r e , two were shot off Scarborough, by Mr. J. Garle Broune,
of Leicester, in the year 1850. Others frequently on different parts
of the coast in autumn and winter—many in 1830. Two in full
plumage near Doncaster. It has also occurred near H e b d c n Bridge,
one, a young bird, at E i l a n d , near Halifax, November 17fh., 1832.
Two or three near Sutton-on-Derwent, a few near Huddersfield. In
Norfolk, it is sometimes met with in winter, but has been very rarely
p r o c u r e d in summer plumage. In Lincolnshire, a fine specimen was
obtained on T r i l l i n g h am Bond, near Lincoln, the 24th. of January,
1850. One of these birds was killed near Sittingbourne, Kent, in
1840, of which Mr. Chafiby has written me word. Que was found
