T H E Red-necked Grebe is common in Sweden and D e n m a r k , Holland,
F r a n c e , Switzerland, and I t a l y ; as also in Germany, and the eastern
countries of E u r o p e . In Asia, it appears to be found in J a p a n and
Persia.
I n N o r t h America it was noticed b y the lamented Sir J o h n F r a n k l i n,
d u r i n g his expedition in 1823; and Audubon relates that it occurs
in the Bay of F u n d y , and in different parts of the U n i t e d States.
I t is for the most part a sea bird, but occurs also frequently on
lakes, ponds, and rivers, and in these latter it nidificates, as mentioned
hereafter.
I n Yorkshire, one or two used to be shot near Doncaster every
w i n t e r ; a specimen near W o r s b o r o u g h in 1830; many have been shot
or taken near Huddersfleld; a few near Barnsley, Hebden Bridge,
and Leeds; one at Ripponden in 1800, and one more recently was
shot in the river Ouse, near York. They are occasionally met with
near Bridlington Quay in winter; one was obtained in full plumage,
in September, 1852, off B r i d l i n g t o n Quay, by Mr. H . C. W e a v e r , of
Newark, who records another killed on the banks of the Trent,
about two miles above Newark, Nottinghamshire. Another was obt
a i n e d on the Trent between B u r t o n and Stapenhill, in April, 1849.
I n Devonshire, five specimens occurred at Slapton Ley, early in the
year 1809. In the same county a fine one was killed near Barnstaple,
in F e b r u a r y , 1850; and another at Teignmonth in J a n u a r y.
I t is said to be not uncommon on the Cornish coast. I have a specimen
in my collection which, many years ago, 'once upon a time'
I am sorry to say, was shot off the coast of the adjoining county of
Dorset, near the village of Charmouth. It is not an uncommon
