T H E Eared Grebe belongs to various countries of E u r o p e — I c e l a n d,
Russia, Sweden, Lapland, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, Greece,
F r a n c e , I t a l y , and Zealand. In Asia it is found in Siberia, and lias
been procured also from Persia. It is said to be a denizen of the
U n i t e d States, and to belong, too, to the Falkland Islands.
I t s haunts are fresh-water lakes, rivers, and pools, as also the seacoast.
A specimen of this b i r d was taken in J a n u a r y , 1850, in a stacky
a r d at Thnrsway, near Swinhope, Lincolnshire, as I am informed by
t h e Rev. li. 1'. Alington. They used formerly, as recorded by Penn
a n t , to breed in the fens near Spalding. One was obtained in
S u r r e y , at F r e n s h am Pond, near Farnham. In Cambridgeshire one
on W h i t t l c s r a AYash, the middle of December, 1849, and two others
near Wisbeaeh, about the same time. In Cornwall a specimen, a
m a l e , was obtained near T r u r o in April, 1829; one a t ' G w c e k in
F e b r u a r y , 1856. Two in 1847, by T . Passingham, Esq., at Pcnnance
P o i n t ; several were seen in 1849, about Gwyllynvase and Swanpool,
F a l m o u t h , and one J a n u a r y l o t h . , 1851. In fact it is said to be not
uncommon. In Y o r k s h i r e , a few near H u d d e r afield, I l e b d e n Bridge,
a n d York.
I n Norfolk one was shot near Yarmouth, on the 14th. of April,
1851. Two others, a male and female, in fine plumage, on the 17th.
of the same month. They are rarely shot on Breydon-on-the-Broads.
