London markets, One was caught on the Cumberland coast on the
1st. of .May. 1834.
I n Oxfordshire it is occasionally found in the neighbourhood of
Weston-on-thc-Grcen, in winter. I once h a d one shot near Lyme Regis,
Dorsetshire: others have been procured there also. They are very
common on Breydon, Y a r m o u t h , Norfolk, in w i n t e r , a n d arc occasionally
met with in summer plumage on the coast of that county. Several
near Lynn the beginning of 1852.
One of these Divers, an immature specimen, was shot at Blathcrwycke,
iu Northamptonshire, and another fell to the gun of the Hon.
T. L. Powys, on the 5th. of May, 1855. In the spring of the same
year, one, in winter plumage, of which J. R. L i t t l e , Esq. has written
me word, was shot near Whittlesea Wash, in Cambridgeshire. In
Lancashire one was caught near Lythani, in a snare set for rabbits,
by one of the gamekeepers of Talbot Clifton, E s q . , December the 10th.,
1849. In Suffolk it has occurred at W o o d b r i d g e . In Nottinghamshire
one was killed near Melbourne, on the 31st. of J a n u a r y , 1848, d u r i ng
the very severe weather that occurred that season. Again, in another
inland county, one was shot on the Severn opposite the Deanery at
Worcester, about the 1st. of December, 1847, and two others afterwards
in the same neighbourhood.
Eight individuals of this species were discovered at Clandon, near
Godalming, Surrey, the 14th. of October, 1848, and one of them, a
young bird of the year, was secured. One was also found near Guildford,
on the 18th. of the same month; in all probability one of the
same party. Iu Derbyshire one appeared in the b e g i n n i n g of 1844,
on the Derwent, near Derby, and was obtained.
I n Yorkshire one specimen is reported by Dr. F a r r a r , as having
been shot in W'oolley Park, in the West Riding, the seat of Godfrey
Wentworth, Esq., in July, 1833; a second was shot at Banks Hall,
near Barnsley; and a third was obtained at Staincross. Several have
been taken near Sheffield in winter, some at l l e b d e n Bridge, a n d others
near Doucaster and Huddersfield. One at H a r e h i l l s , near Leeds, in
January, 1829; another on the River Ouse in 1838; one on the pond
in front of W a r t e r P r i o r y , the seat of L o r d Muncaster, quite high
ground, in F e b r u a r y , 1862. It h a d been there a fortnight, when it died.
The immature bird is not uufrequently obtained near York. The
same remark applies to the coast.
This species breeds in the northern parts of Scotland, in Sutherlandshire.—
Mr. Selby saw a pair of old birds there in J u n e , 1834,
which evidently had a nest.—So it does also, or used to do, in the
Orkneys, where it i» nut rare. Sir William J a r d i n e has shot the bird
