T H E Bed-throated Diver is another very fine and striking-looking
b i r d .
I n Norway it is a common species, and is to be seen on most of
t h e lakes and fiords, both salt-water and fresh, but chiefly where the
l a t t e r p r e v a i l s . It also belongs t o F i n l a n d , L a p l a n d , D e n m a r k , Sweden,
Russia, and Kamtschatka, the Ferroe Isles, a n d Iceland, and has been
t a k e n on the coasts of H o l l a n d , F r a n c e , and I t a l y , Greece, and in
Switzerland. In Asia, M. Temminek assigns it to J a p a n , and it is said
also t o occur in S i b e r i a , T a r t a r y , and along the shores of the Caspian
Sea, t h e Black Sea, and the Sea of Azoff. Likewise in America in
v a r i o u s parts of the n o r t h e r n half of the continent, on the shores of
L a b r a d o r , Boothia, the Bay of F u n d y , Hudson's Bay, the Bay of
Boston, a n d along different other shores and lakes of the U n i t e d States
—thus also in Greenland.
T h e y o u n g occur in the winter along the Cornish coast, more or less
commonly. One adult- was shot near Pennance, F e b r u a r y 2nd., 1845.
I m m a t u r e birds more frequently there and at Gwyllynvase. One on
t h e River Helford, in April, 1850. In Devonshire they also are not
uncommon, that is to say, young birds, and the same observation
applies to the counties of K e n t , Essex, Sussex, on the coast of which
manv a p p e a r e d in the winter of 1795, as recorded by Montagu, Hants,
D u r h a m , and Northumberland. Specimens are often on sale in the
