THIS Crake is not uncommon in t h e southern parts of Europe; for
instance; in Italy, Germany, Turkey, Hungary, and the sunny side of
France, and also is obtained in Holland. It has been found also in
Asia, namely, in Persia and Japan, according to M. Temminck.
In this country it is a rare species. The first recorded specimen
occurred in Yorkshire, May the 6th., 1807, on the ' B a n k s of the Y o r e /
a locality since made of some celebrity in t h e ' P o e t ' s Corner' in t he
'Yorkshire Gazette.' In 1836, another in Yorkshire, near Scarborough;
and one many years ago was captured at Cantley, near Doncastcr, t he
seat of John Walbanke Guilders, Esq., M.P. In the same year one,
in the autumn, at Adwick, by Manchester. The next near Ashburton,
in Devonshire, in the year 1809, and was figured and described by
Colonel Montagu; others, some three or four, since. In Sussex one
was picked up in an exhausted state at Seaford, the beginning of March,
1848. Another was obtained in Norfolk, in May, 1812, and again
another in the same year on the banks of the Thames, near Chelsea.
In March, 1826, one, a female, was caught at Barnwell, near Cambridge.
In 1834, one was shot near Yarmouth, Norfolk, and another, a male,
at Heigham, in that county, March 30th., 1347. In October, 1835,
one taken on the bank of t h e A d u r , at Beeding, near Shorcham, Sussex.
