The* female is somewhat less than the male, and her plumage is not
so clear and bright. The bill is without the knob. The band on the
breast is not so wide,
Tlio young, the first year, have the head and hack of the neck,
blackish brown. Bill, dull yellowish red; the space between it and
the eyes white, eyes surrounded with white; the forehead white. The
chin and throat are while, as also is the breast. The flanks tinged
with brown and with grey centres to the feathers; the back on the
upper part pale brown, the longer feathers edged and tipped with
white. The greater and lesser wing coverts, white, with deep grey
edges, giving them a mottled appearance; primaries, black; the
secondaries, chesnut on the edges, shew the approach of the green
speculum, but tipped with white; tertiaries, white, edged with chesnut
brown. 'Hie tail has the tips of the four middle feathers black. Legs,
toes, and webs, pale dull yellowish red, with a shade of horn-colour.
The whole plumage is indistinct.
