Tringa— ? Mariiima—Maritime—belonging to the sea.
T H I S very distinct species is sufficiently common throughout Europe,
from the snores of the Mediterranean, Italy, Switzerland, and F r a n c e ,
to Holland, Norway, Iceland, Greenland, Spitzbcrgen, and t h e Faroe
Islands. It occurs in t h e like latitudes in N o r t h America.
Many arc found on the coasts of England, Scotland, and Wale*,
and some visit Ireland. In Orkney they are very numerous, as also
in Shetland.
They breed in Iceland, and other northern lands. A few remain
for the purpose in this country. The nest has been found in Scotland,
and young birds, scarcely able to fly, were met with by M r .
Selby, on one of the F e r n Islands, off t h e coast of Northumberland.
I n England, the species occurs, or has occurred, in Yorkshire, a
specimen was shot on Sowerbv Moor in lSo:2, and one on Ovendon
Moor in 18°."; they have also been met with at Filey and other parts
of the coast—Norfolk, Suffolk near Ipswich, Essex, Kent, Durham,
Sussex, Devonshire, as between Exmouth and Hudleigh Saltcrton in
the autumn of 1868, and other places, but not common, and Dorsetshire.
Also in Cornwall, but not commonly, near Gwyllynvasc, one
shot by Mr. Paseoe, November ¡¿2nd., 181(i; one at Swanpool, shot
by T. Passingham, Esq., 1848; one b y M r . G . Copeland, at I'endennis
Castle. It has since been stated by Dr. Bullmore to be by far
the commonest of t h e family on that coast, almost always.
I once shot one myself, several years ago, among the rocks at lowwater,
off the e n d of t h e ' C o b b , ' the local name of t h e pier, Lyme
Regis. It was, ' n i male mcmini,' in t h e autumn. It is very common
IQ winter on the Dunbar shore, Scotland, as I am informed b y Kobert
