than the third ; each tarsus is terminated by two curved, pectinated claws, and below them
a small scopula is situated. The palpi, which are short, resemble the leg s in colour, and
have a curved, pectinated claw at their extremity. The cephalo-thorax is short, broad, compressed
before, rounded on the sides, convex and hairy ; it is o f a yellowish-brown colour,
with a large, longitudinal, dark-brown band on each side. The eye s are disposed on the
anterior part o f th e cephalo-thorax, in the form o f a crescent ; th e lateral eye s are seated on
tubercles, those o f the posterior row being rather the largest o f the eight. The falces are
small, conical, and vertical ; and the maxillæ are gibbous near the base.. These parts are o f a
yellowish-brown colour. The lip is triangular, rounded at th e apex, and has a dark-browrn
hue, with yellowish-brown margins. The sternum is heart-shaped, and o f a yellowish-brown
colour, with numerous minute, black spots. T he abdomen is broader- in the posterior than in
the anterior region, but is pointed at the spinners ; it is somewhat convex above, and projects
a little over the base o f the cephalo-thorax ; the whole is covered with short hairs, those on
the upper part being o f a gray colour in the middle o f the anterior extremity, which is
notched, and o f a glossy, yellow hue on the posterior part; when the hairs are removed, a
dark-brown band is observed to occupy the medial line o f the anterior half, and to it there
succeeds a series o f curved bars o f the same colour, which are enlarged at their extremities,
and decrease in length as th ey approach the spinners ; an irregular, .dark-brown band
extends along the upper part o f each side to the anus, where the two unite ; the sides and
under part are o f a gray colour, the former b eing spotted with dark-brown, and the latter
having a broad, longitudinal, dull-brown band in the middle ; th e sexual organs have a
reddish-brown h u e ; and that o f th e branchial opercula is yellow.
The male differs widely from t h e . female ; it is smaller, and the len g th o f its le g s is
greater, a le g o f the second pair measuring ^ths o f an inch. The cephalo-thorax is o f a
brownish-black hue, w ith narrow, white margins. T he palpi are rather long, th e radial joint
is smaller than the cubital, and the digital joint, which is o f a short, broad, oval figure, and
dark-brown colour, is convex and hairy externally, concave within, comprising the palpal
organs; these organs are high ly developed, not very complicated in structure, with a short,
curved,^prominent, pointed spine a t the upper part, on the outer side, and are o f a very dark-
brown colour. T he abdomen has a brown-black hue above, with a few white hairs at its
anterior extremity ; the sides are white ; and the under part is o f a brown colour.
B o th sexe s have numerous compound hairs on various* parts o f th e body and limbs.
This active spider frequents wooded districts in England and Wales, and being provided,
like other sp ecies o f the genus, with scopulæ situated below the tarsal claws, it runs with
great rapidity on the dry, perpendicular surfaces o f highly polished bodies. Though the
sex e s differ so remarkably in colour when adult, y e t they resemble each other in that particular
before th ey arrive at maturity. In June the female constructs a lenticular cocoon, o f white
silk, o f a fine but compact texture, measuring ,th o f an inch in diameter, in which she deposits
about seventy-two spherical eggs, o f a yellowish-white colour, not agglutinated together. This
cocoon is enclosed in a cell o f dull-white silk, of a loose texture, usually attached to a dead
leaf, th e ed g e s o f which are drawn towards each other by silken lines connecting them with
the cell.

The cephalo-thorax is convex, hairy* compressed before, truncated in front, and rounded
on the sides, w'hich are marked with furrows converging towards the middle ; its colour is
light-gray, intermixed with yellowish-brown and dark-brown ; th e latter hue forms a medial
band, w'hose anterior extremity is ramified in the region o f th e eyes, and several oblique rays
and spots on the s id e s; the*margins have a y ellowish-white tint, wh ich extends, in front, to
th e anterior row o f ey e s. The falces are small, conical, vertical, and o f a dark-brown hue,
with a conspicuous, yellowish-white spot in front. T h e maxillæ are convex near the base, and
inclined towards the lip, which is triangular and rounded at the apex. T he se parts are o f a
dark-brown colour, tinged w ith red, the lip b eing the darkest. The sternum is heart-shaped,
and o f a yellowish-brown hue. The eye s are disposed on the anterior part o f the cephalo-
thorax, in two transverse, curved rows, forming a cr escent whose con v ex side is directed
forwards ; the lateral eyes o f both rows are seated on minute tubercles, those o f the posterior
row b e in g the largest, and the two intermediate ones o f the anterior row the smallest o f the
eight. The leg s are long, provided with hairs and sessile spines, and o f a pale, reddish-brown
colour, with black spots and annuli, ab road , black streak exten din g along the anterior side of
the femora o f the first pair ; the second pair is the longe st, th en the firSt, and the fourth pair
is slightly longer than the third ; each tarsus is terminated by two curved, minutely p ectinated
claws, below w hich there is a small scopula. The palpi resemble the le g s in colour, and have
a broad, longitudinal, black streak on the anterior side o f the humerus. The abdomen is
broader in the posterior than in the anterior region, b u t is pointed at the spinners ; it is hairy,
somewhat convex above, and the anterior extremity, which is notched in th e middle, projects
over the base o f the cephalo-thorax ; the upper part is o f a yellowish-gray colour, tinged with
green, a few curved, black lines forming very obtuse angles, whose vertices are directed
forwards, and whose convex sides are turned towards each other, occurring in the posterior
region ; the sides are mottled with black, and on each there are two oblique streaks o f the
same hue, bordered posteriorly with long white hairs ; the under part has a yellow-brown hue,
four dark-brown lines extending from the anterior extremity to the spinners, where they
meet ; and the colour o f the branchial opercula is brown.
Philodromus p a llid u s has numerous compound hairs on various parts o f its body and
limbs.
