A General View o f the Colony o f The Cape, and a more particular
Defcription o f the Promontory called The Cape o f Good
Hope.
B y the capture of the Cape of Good Hope and o f Ceylon, the
Britilh language is now heard at the fouthern extremities o f the
four great continents or quarters o f the globe. Three of thefe
have fubmitted to the power of its arms ; and the fpirit o f commerce
and adventurous induftry has direded the attention of its
enterprifing fubjeds to the fourth, on'the fmall ifland o f Staaten,
at the extreme poipt o f South America, where a kind of feulement
has been formed for carrying on the fouthern whale-
fifhery. O f thefe extreme points the Cape of Good Hope cannot
be confidered as the leaft important, either with regard tQ
its geographical fituation, as favorable for carrying on a fpeedy
