near the Efcurial, and on the hills of Buytreras, on the
mountains o f Manzanares, in different parts of the Alcarria
(a), ftieh as the diftrid o f Lupiana, mountains o f
Buen Dia, Albalete de Zorita, Fuente Novilla, and other
places : it is particularly common near all the villages,
and lands, belonging to the extenfive Serrania o f Cuenca,
all the ftony mountains of the lordlhip of Molina, and
near the fource o f the Tagus. In Aragon, on the
mountains of Daroca, P u e r to s o f Atea, and Acere, on
the mountains of Burgos, and Leon, and county o f
Niebla, and Carrera de Leon, from Contorno de Villal-
manfo, to C o g o llo s a n d from Manciles, to Villadiegd,
as you go from Burgos toCervera,in fo copious a manner,
that the place is called Gayubal: alfo on the fkirts of the
Pyrenees o f Catalonia, in Bifcay, and Navarre, and in
the kingdoms of Granada and Valencia ; infomuch that
the before-mentioned profeffor adds, that he does not
recoiled ever to have gone upon a botanical party,
without feeing it. It is fo univerfally known in Spain,,
that it has its particular name;? in almoft every province,

The great variety o f thefe names iliew, how Univerfal
it is all over the kingdom, and proves what little depen-
dance is to be had on the relations o f travellers, who
only fee the high roads, and never deviate from them,
to infped into remote places : even Cluiius, the molt
intelligent, and curious o f thofe writers, tells us, he only
faw it at the Venta del Baul, when it can be made
appear, that in all thofe parts o f Spain, which he tra-
verfed, it grows in great quantities ; and were all the
uncultivated places to be mentioned, where the Gayuba
is found, particularly, fuch as are called Rub tales, it would
form a lift of almoft all the ftony and uncultivated places
in the kingdom. It is perennial and an evergreen,
flowers in March, and April, and the berries are ripe
in September, and Odober. The leaves are narrpwj
rounded at the extremity^ and contain only one fibre;
