Another hot fpring flows in the village o f Caldetas
which likewife takes its name from the waters, like the
former, though expreflive of a lefs degree of heat in the
water, as well as the inferiority of the place in refpeCt to
the other. This village'is about two miles from-the city
o f Mataro, near the fea fide, and is alfo frequented by
perfons affli&ed with the above-mentioned complaints in
a flight degree, for the water being only tepid, it has not
the efficacy o f the hot water at Caldas. Thofe o f Calde-
tas are alfo taken as a purgative, and are not fit for any
culinary purpofe. You will eafily conceive that thofe
watering places differ widely from what are fo called in
other countries, being folely frequented by the infirm
out of pur a necejidad, and are therefore indifferently fup-
ported ; was the beneficial improvement of England to
take place, it would in a fhort time extend the reputation
o f thefe lalutary waters, and make them rival, if not
out-do Spa, Aix la Chapelle, Bareges, and moil of the
noted places on the continent, over all which the famous
baths of Caldas have fuch an undoubted fuperiority in
point o f climate and fituation.
L E T T E R XXII,
Remains o f ancient volcanos in Spain.
IT is not my intention to advance or add any new hypothetical
theories to the many that o f late years have
been offered relative to the grand fubjeCt o f volcanos, and
how far in conjunction with earthquakes they have been
the powerful caufes o f the great inequalities and lhat-
tered condition o f the furface o f the earth. Varieties
o f fpecimens o f rock, ftones, and earths, bearing
evident marks o f a former fufion or calcination, have
been colleCted, though found in places where no volcanos
at prefent exift, yet leaving no doubt of their having
formerly exifted, and that ages have elapfed fince
their extinction : this fubjeCt o f late years has more particularly
engaged the attention of curious travellers, and
ingenious writers of different nations. Sir William Hamilton,
his majeity’s envoy at the court o f Naples, has
not only given a more perfeCt account o f the eruptions
of Vefuvius, but has confiderably enlarged the field, and
brought to light new and important difcoveries, with
refpeCt to the volcanic eruptions o f Italy. Thofe o f
France and different parts of Germany have been likewife
laid before the public, but thofe o f Spain remain ftillun-
