
Formerly the pure-bred Otter-hound was used, but with the nineteenth century
many masters of Otter-hounds have used other breeds. Mr. Collier, for fifty
years master of the Culmstock, used either harriers with a dash of foxhound
blood or pure-bred foxhounds, whilst many were drafts from the Devon and
Somerset staghounds. Other masters have used mixed packs, whilst the Carlisle
pack are true Otter-hounds. Bloodhounds have also been used with success.
Though the true Otter-hound may not be so fast as the foxhound, his nose is
unrivalled, and he will own a faint scent that the other hound will not
acknowledge.
