Ill 189'! I |)r0|J0sed for this species the sbort-lived generic name of Xanthochlumijs. Ambhjorms ìnornata
bad been known for twenty-three years, and none of the males sent by collectors showed a sign of a yellow
c r e s t ; but no sooner had I se])arated the southerLi species than Dr. Meyer received an adnit male of
A. hmmita with a fully developed crcst, and of course the genus XanlhochUimys was deprived of its only
claim to distinction [cf. Meyer, Bull. Brit. Orn. Club, iv. p. xvii). Since then I have seen several
r,])ecimens of the male from the Arfak Mountains and from the Owen Staidey Mountains, ÌLI South-eastern
New Guinea, in Mr. Rothschild's collection.
According to Dr. Loria the species is abundant in the Moroka district of the Astrolabe Range. The male
has tlic bill horn-colour, greyer on the lower mandible, the feet greenish horn-colour or greenish-grey, and
the iris chestnut or hazel. Young males resemble the old females ( c f . Salvad. I. e.).

Mr. RolbschiUl describes the female as greenish-brown aliove, with the wings and tail reddisli-browri ;
under surface of body brown, merging into clear reddish-brown on the middle of the body ; the six feathers
at the base of the bill are shorter and not l)oat-sha|)e(l.

Xanthomehis aureus (iypici/s'), Rothschild, Thierreicb, Lief. 2, Parad. p. 10 (1898).
Dr. Meyer gives the following note from Iiis diary of 1873 :—" I shot this species at about a height of
2260 feet south of Rubi on a bigli tree. Iris clear yellow. The Papuans are afraid to kill this bird, for fear
it should bring on thunder."

p. 53 (1898).—Rothschild, Thierreich, Lief. 2, Parad. p. 13 (1898).
GENUS XII. CHLAMYDODERA.
If Gould had nnderstood that the proper rendering of his generic term for this genus of Bower-Birds
slionUl be CMamydodera instead of CUamijdera, he would have accepted the correction, as I can vouch from
personal knowledge of his character. It seems to me a little hard on him to revive his faultily composed
name of Cldamydera, as the Hon. Walter Rothschild has done (Novit. Zool. v. p. 86; id. Thierreicb,
Lief. 2, Parad. p. 8), when everyone is now perfectly familiarized with the correct rendering of the genus
Cldamydodera a cloak ; ^fpr?, neck).
