T H I S beautiful Crocus is unqueftionably diflinft as a fpecies, and has never been noticed by any
fyflemetic writer except Miller; who has defcribed it accurately under the name of ¿ i ^ u s , in the
8lh edition of his celebrated Diftionary. It is very hardy, flowers early in February, and may be
readily diftinguiftied from other Crocufes by its leaves being much longer than the flowers, at the
time of flowering. When the fun ihines ftrong, the flowers have a juft perceptible fragrant fcent;
a circumftance very unufual in this genus; all the other fpecies, (one we call fragra7,s excepted) having
more or lefs of an unpleafant fmell. It feldom produces feeds in this country, or varies in colour;
but increafes by the root.
