T H I S new fpecies, of Thunberg's new genus Sanfeviera, which is a branch of the Linnaean genua
Aletris; was introduced into this country from China, by T. Evans, Efq, of Stepney; in;the year 1792:
but is ftill very rare. Our drawing was made from a fine plant in the colledion of J. Vere, Efq. of
Kenfington Gore, in the month of March •. Mr. Anderfon, his botanic gardener, informs us, he has
treated it as a hothoufe plant? but it will probably be found to fucceed better in the greenhoufe,
like other Chinefe plants. It is propagated by parting the roots. In habit it refembles Hemerocallis
more than Sanfeviera, but agrees with the generical chara£ters of Sanfeviera zeylanica. With
Aletris fragrans it alfo agrees in many particulars; but with Aletris farinofa is quite at variance.
• A root of it, (lately parted from the individual here figured,} flowered at MeiTrs, Grimwood and Wykes's, in February.
