T he F irst Volume of this Work is now respectfully submitted to the
Public. I t contains illustrations of fiwe species of Camellia, sixteen
varieties of Camellia Japónica, which have been imported from China,
and nineteen selected from those which have been raised from seed in
this country; accompanied b y a minute description of each, and a
history, as far as we could ascertain, of th e ir introduction and origin;
all of w hich, we tru st, will be found satisfactory and correct.
I n addition to th e above, we have endeavoured to redeem our promise
a t folio 6. b y giving, a t th e end of the volume, a succinct account
of the fittest compost for Camellias, and of th e most approved methods
for the ir propagation and treatment. This, it is hoped, will make the
volume complete in itself, and, a t the same time, render it independent
of th e second one; th e publication of which, from several unforeseen
events, we are reluctantly obliged to postpone for the present. We
