The cook having Been very negligent‘in his bufinefs,
fpoiling often the rice, and being fufpeóted, in concert with
one o f the China-men^ his affiftant, o f appropriating to thera-
felves part o f the very fmall quantity o f meat- they could afford
to boil with i t ; he was ordered to be punilhed with a
Cobbing, In cohfequence o f the regulations before mentioned
to have been made amongft themfelves, this-was carried
b y a majority. T he Cobbing was performed by {tripping
him to the waift, and tying his hands againft a tree, to keep
him extended] when one man, with a thin flat piece of
wood, like a battledore, impofed-the number o f ftripes he
Was ordered to receive. The cook’s afiiftant was alfo punilhed
in like manner ; and another China-man for wounding
one o f his countrymen on. the head with a ftotie. R aa
Kook, feeing thefe fellows tied up, appeared concerned, and
applied to Captain Wilson to beg them off; but the fafety
o f this little community abfolutely required that regularity
and' obedience fhould be preferved; and this was fully explained
to the. General, as an apology for his reqneft not
being., complied with. He-flood by, however, whilft the
punilhment was inflidted ; and not finding it was o f a ferious-
nature,, feemed convinced our people were r ig h t; and when,
the China-men came to receive the fame difcipline, they fet
up fo lamentable a cry, that he was even diverted by their,
pufillanimity.
