quired, there was not much chance of our getting
away from Tronyem for several days.
As I could-teike no active part in directing or
superintending the repairs of the vessel, my only
resource was to stroll about the streets of the
town and the immediate vicinity, and occasionally
to amuse myself by taking a few sketches, chiefly
Avith the view to kill time, which otherwise Avould
have hung heavily on my hands in a place like
this, Avhere I had resided long enough to see
every thing but a year before. To Mr. Johansen
and his amiable lady I felt myself under the greatest
obligation for the very kind attention shown to
me during my stay at Tronyem. Lille Gaarden
Avas, in fact, my home; and I shall often think
with pleasure on the many happy hours passed in
the agreeable society of this excellent family, and
their friends Avho used to associate at their pleasant
little villa. I ’he situation is delightful: it stands
on the same piece of rising ground on which the
Fortress of Christiansund is built, and commands
a fine view of the city, as Avell as of the beautiful
fiord, and the mountains beyond it. The annexed
sketch Avas taken from the grass-plat immediately
in front of the house, and Avill serve to convey some
idea of the beautiful and diversified prospect from
this social retreat.
I was not so fortunate as to find here any of those
excellent straAvberries and cherries, Avhich, contrary
to expectation, in the latitude of 63°, De Capell
Brooke tasted quite ripe early in J u ly ; but I
