S I did not give up m y deiign o f touchin g at Eimeo,-
at day-break, in the morning o f the 30th, after leavin
g Otaheite, I flood for the North end o f the ifian d ; the
harbour, which I wiihe-d to examine; be in g at that part o f
it. Omai, in his canoe, having, arrived there .long before
us, had taken fome n eceffary meafures' to fhew us the place;
However, w e were not without pilots-, h a vin g feveral men
o f Otaheite on board; and nor a few women. Not caring to
truft entirely to thefe guides, I fent two ooats to examin e
the harbour and on their m a k in g the fignal for fafe anchorage,
we flood in with-the fhips, and- anchored clofe u p
to the head o f the inlet, in ten fathoms water, over a bottom
o f foft mud, and moored with a hawfer fa il to th e
fhore.
