T he upper part o f the wings, and tip'of the tail, weré black,
with the reft white ; the bill yellow ifh ; upon the whole,
not un like the fea-gu ll, thou gh larger.
On the 6th, at noon, being in the latitude o f 44” to' North,
and the longitude o f 234 4.0 Eaft, we faw two feals, and feve-
ral whale s; and at day-break, the next morning, the long -
looked for coaft o f New Albion * was leen, extending from
N on h E|ft to South Eaft, diftant ten or twelve leagues. At
noon, bur latitude was 44° 33' North, and our longitude
235° 20' Eaft ; and the land extended from North Eaft h a lf
North, to South Eaft by South, about eight leagues diftant.
In this fituation, w e had feventy-three fathoms water, over
a muddy bottom, and about a leagu e farther o ff found
ninety fathoms. T he land appeared to be o f a moderate
h e ight, diverfified with hills and vallies, and, almoft every
where, covered with wood. The re was, however, no ve ry
ftriking object on any part o f it, except one hill, whofe elevated
fummit was flat. T h is bore Eaft from us, at noon.
At the Northern extreme, the land formed a point, which I
called Cape Foul-weather, from the ve ry bad weather that we,
foon after, met with. I ju d g e it to lie in the latitude o f 44°
55' North, and in the longitude o f 235° 54' Eaft.
We had variable ligh t airs and calms,, till eight o’clock in
the evening, when a breeze fprung u p at South Weft. With
it,. I ftood to the North Weft, under an eafy fail, w aiting fo r
da y-light to range, a long the coaft. But a tfo u f , next mornin
g, the wind ihifted to. North Weft, and blew in fqualls,
w ith rain. Our courfe was North Eaft, till near ten o’clock,.
