
black; breast, dull white, the loose feathers ash-coloured, light brown,
and dull white; back, pale rufous, mottled with zigzag irregular black
bars varying in breadth. The wings extend when closed to the end
of the tail; they expand to the width of three feet eight inches;
greater and lesser wing coverts, pale rufous, mottled with zigzag
black bars; primaries, black on the outer edge, the inner edge black
on the upper half, the lower white; secondaries, rich brown on the
upper half, the lower half black on the outer edge, the inner edge
white; tertiaries, dark brown, tipped with white; greater and lesser
under wing coverts, white. Tail, pale brown and rufous, with a dark
band near the end, and the tip buff white; upper tail coverts, brown,
with fine interrupted blackish bands, which are lower down on the
inner than on the outer edge of the feathers; under tail coverts,
white, pencilled and barred with blackish brown. The legs, which
are bare of feathers a little above the knee, and toes, greenish
yellow.
