T h i s handsome bird is in Europe found, though rarely, in Italy, also
in France, Spain, and Switzerland, while migrating, and a few breed
in Holland and Germany. Mr. Yarrcll says, ' I t visits Finland, and t he
countries to the eastward, but Is very rarely seen on the islands, or on
the western shores of the Baltic.' Meyer writes, ' W e are credibly
informed by an eye witness, that the numbers of this species that visit
the western coast of Denmark, during the mouth of May, on their
passage to the north, are so great that it is impossible to give a
numerical description of them; the islands between the mouth of the
Elbe, and the western coast of Jutland, arc perfectly covered with them,
and at low water, the shores are covered, in parts, to such an extent
that the eye cannot compass their lines. On the eastern shores of
Denmark it is remarkable how few are met with, comparatively speaking.'
Lmnteus mentions Lapland, and Thicneman Norway, as other countries
for it.
I n Asia it is found about the Caspian Sea, and in India, on the
mainland, as also in the Islands—Java, Timor, etc.
