P m s is a 'first cousin, once removed,* of the Starling, with whom
a c c o r d i n g l y it keeps up, as will he seen, the intercommunication of
r e l a t i o n s h i p , but its position in the society of birds is somewhat
anomalous.
I n Europe it occurs occasionally in Russia, Dalmatia, Lapland,
Sweden, and Suabia, and r e g u l a r l y visits Spain, Italy, Hungary,
a n d the south of France, likewise occasionally at Corfu and Crete,
in the Mediterranean. It is a native of Asia, in Siberia, and in
India seems to be very abundant in the Dukkun, forty or fifty being
sometimes killed at a shot out of the vast flocks which almost darken
t h e air. Thence they range to Persia, Arabia, and Syria. In Africa
it is also met with, in Egypt.
In Yorkshire, two were shot near Bawtry; one at Skiningrove.

at Ripley; one in 1828, at F a r n l e y Hall, near Otley, the seat of
W a l t e r l l a w k s w o r t h Fawkes, E s q . ; one near Beverley; one at N o r th
B u r t o n ; one at Boynton 11 all. near Bridlington, the seat of Sir
W i l l i am Strickland, Baronet, in 1829; and one in Coatham Marsh,
n e a r Redcar, on t h e 28th. of A u g u s t , 1851.
T h e following have also been obtained at various times:—One at
Norwood, Surrey, near L o n d o n ; and one at Iver Court, Buckinghamshire.
In C a m b r i d g e s h i r e , one at Haydon House, near Royston. In
Suffolk, one at Woodbridge, in J u l y , 1832, one at Lound, near
Lowestoft, in J u n e , 1851, a n d another on the 7th. September, 1850;
