the eye-- nearly black; neck on the back, and nape, cinereous brown,
with a tinge of (dive; chin and throat, white; breast, white, with a
very delicate rose tint and grey on the sides.
The wings have the first feather very short, the second nearly of
the same length as the fifth, and both of these shorter than the third,
fourth, and sixth, which are also nearly uniform in length and the
longest; primaries, dark cinereous brown, with a tinge of olive, the
edges lighter coloured, the shafts darker shining brown; under
wing coverts, buff white; tail, dark cinereous brown, with a tinge
of olive, the edges lighter coloured, the outer feather on each side
being white, tinged with reddish brown more or less on the inner
portion and on its inner edge, the second tipped with white, the
shafts of all darker shining brown; upper tail coverts, ash grey;
under tail coverts, pale reddish brown or buff white; legs, toes, and
claws, black and strong.
Femalej length, a little over six inches; bill, black, and very
strong; head, crown, neck on the back, and nape, dark ash-coloured
brown; chin, dull white; throat and breast, brownish white, ending
in light brown; back, dark ash-coloured brown. Wings, underneath,
light brown; tail, brownish black, the outermost feather on each side
white, and the next edged with dull white; legs, very strong; toes,
black; claws, very short and black.
The young birds of the year resemble the female.
