Sylvia. Sylva—A wood. Suea'ca—Of Sweden.
'I'llis elegant bird, whose bright plumage reminds one of the gay
colours indicative of the tropical regions, occurs throughout Europe;
but almost exclusively in the summer—very few being ever seen in
the winter. It is found as far north as Russia, Norway, Lapland,
Finland, Bothnia, and the northern parts of Sweden, as also in Greece,
France, and Holland, the southernmost parts of Spain, Germany,
'1 huringia, Prussia, and Italy. It is least frequent on the western
side of the continent. In the north of Africa it is found in the
winter. In Asia in Siberia.
It is said to frequent low marshy grounds, the borders of streams,
and the outskirts of forests, but that it' the season be ungenial and
backward, it approaches dwellings and farmsteads in search of food.
Towards the autumn it advances into the more cultivated districts for
the like purpose, probably with its family, whose additional wants
have to be supplied.
()f these birds one was shot at Margate in September, 1842, so
Edward Cole, Esq. has informed mej one also by Mr. T . Embledon,
on Newcastle Town Moor, in May 1826; another in Dorsetshire, and
one, a male, was found dead upon the beach near Yarmouth, Norfolk,
on the ¿»1st. of September, 1811.
The Bluebreast migrates northwards in the spring, and southwards
in the autumn, the former at the cud of March, or beginning of April,
