T he complicated synonymy o f this Pigeon, a s given above, has been unravelled with much care by
Count Salvadori, from whose book on the ornithology o f Papuasia we have copied the greater p art o f our
references, as the work has been so excellently done by our esteemed colleague in Turin. The history of
the species resolves itself into a long account o f the tangle o f names through which it passes, and we do not
propose to tire our readers with these details, which can be fully studied in Count Salvadori’s volume above
quoted.
Not only is the present species found all over New Guinea from the north-west to the south-east, but it
also occurs in the Molucca Islands o f H almahera or Gilolo, Raou, Morotai o r Morty Island, Ternate, Bourou,
and Ceram. In New Guinea it has been met w ith in the Arfak Mountains and a t Dorey, while in the
south-eastern portion o f that great island it has occurred near P o rt Moresby, as well as in the Sogeri district
o f the Astrolabe Range. It is also known from Salwati, Mysol, and YVaigiou, as well as the lie Islands.
Nothing has been recorded concerning its habits.
The following description is taken from a specimen procured by Mr. H. O. Forbes in the Sogeri district
o f the Astrolabe Range : -= 9 H
