o f the information as j t , ip [ sm , i | | f e - .
In the mpjrths_of' March and A p r il last, a number o f natives, -living under the;d5ritish

was universally deemed legal, and that they had long been accustomed-to carry it on, and
o n that account the misfortune which they met with in the prosecution o f it, cannot be
accounted for on the grounds o f contraband.
Whether the Putlanders. w ere guilty o f any irregularity in the Candian country, which
could serve as the pretext for the u sag è th e y met w ith ,. I cannot positively assert •• I have
certainly not heen able to trace any su ch ; and, unfortunately for them, it will appear; ■ b y
a perusal o f the enclosed papers, that after they had completed the o b je e tfo e y had in
•view in the Candian country, and were on their return, home with the areka :nuts,; which
they had procured for.thè articles they had carried from Putelang, they were stopped,
harassed b y delays, and, finally, the whole o f the, areka nu ts confiscated and taken from
them, . and.which a specific account annexed to the.depositions -herewith.transmitted w ill
shew to be 2314 ammonams .taken from division N o .- ij aind 63 ammonams from divi-

, I dare say his E x c e llen c y , on reading the enblosëâ- papers',' 'w ill conclude as I do, that
the seizing o f .the areka nuts took place inco-nse'qn n-è'e ô f the Orders o f the person' ailed,

I shall only further take the liberty o f S àtirig a circumstance which makes the- seizure,
o f the areka nuts;in; question still more difficult to account for, which is; that the Cari-
dians themselves continue, 1 as heretofore, -to bring down the produce o f their country,
,;rrahfely areka’ huts-, jâggher, and rice, to bp exchanged here, at Putelahg, for salt, salt-
fish, and cloth, & c . and there is now; " ithm my view he re, a division o f about ^o
persons from the Candian country, -and 2V50 head o f cattle, peaceably occupiedfin this
traffic. Th is circumstance will also tend to shew how easy itwouM-besto make reprisals
for the injury sustained by the Putlanders; were the British govermne nl so disposed ; a
measure which I do riot- w ish, however,- to be understood as giving any opinion upon. I
have now only to say, that I have been greatly assisted in this investigation’b y the'zeal-
and intelligence o f M r. Johnstone,.: the agent o f the revenue for this district, and, z
