disci recta v. subrecta, pleraque regularia, columnaria v. subcolumnaria, compresso-
tetragona v. tetragono-eompressa, quadrisulca et quadricostatà ( pauciora etiam occurrunt
5 -sulca 5-costata) ; costæ aut uniformes et æquales, in achæniis centralioribus obtuse carinatæ
v. ecarinatæ, in exterioribus marginato-carinatæ, aut biformes, marginales nempe alatæ,
dorsales et ventrales exalàtæ. Achænia disci extima saltern nonnulla occurrunt plus minusve
irregularia, inæqualiter quinquecostata.
Herbæ perennes, caulescentes, glaberrimæ. Caules bifurcati v. iteratim dichotomi (ma-
c r i o r e s simplicesj, speciebus plerisque prostrati v. diffusi (quibusdam radicantes) et parce
foliati v. imo aphylli (foliis nempe ad squamulas minutas subscariosas reductis). F olia sub-
carnosa, glauca, varie runcinata, inæqualiter cartilagineo- (albido-) denticulata; radicalia
conferta, rosulata, petiolata; caulina sessilia, auriculato-subamplexatilia, spârsa, plerumque
remotissima et pauca, interdum ad nodulos (præsertim caulium radicantium) fasciculata v.
subfasciculata. Pedumculi terminales v. laterales et terminales, solitarii v. gemini v. plures,
monocephali, subfiliformes, bracteolati, laterales squamula herbacea v. scariosa opposita
comitati. Bracteolæ pedunculorum scariosæ, minimæ, sparsæ, remotæ y. subimbricatæ, ca-
lyculi squamulis extimis consimiles v. subsimiles.
Genus Microrhynchus essentiàliter a Soncho solummodo differs achæniis in collulnm tenue fragiilimum brevissimum de-
mum ex parte v. ex toto cum disco pappifero irregulariter delabens attractis. Niinia forsan ejus est affinitas cum Lactuca,
quamvis in hac achænia inagis sint compressa.
