T h e Camellias, here designated E n g l ish C amellias,
were raised with a number of others of less beauty, principally
from the Anemone Flowered or Warrata’h Camellia,
fertilized by P ollen from as many sorts as could be
obtained. The seed, which ripened in the autumn of
1819, was sown as soon as gathered, and came up in the
course of the winter, the seed pot having the common
protection of a green-house: when the seedling plants were
three years old, they were inarched, as a means of expediting
the blossom; in consequence, a few of the inarched
plants flowered in the spring of 1824, and it is remarkable
not one of the seedlings flowered on its own stem that
year: this spring, 1825, nearly the whole bloomed, and
furnished the Specimens now pourtrayed : as seminal varieties,
they are not properly' subjects for Botanical arrangement:
in giving to each a distinctive appellation, I considered
it an act of mercy to adopt such names only as are easily
pronounced.
