GRIMMIA ATRATA.
Grimmia caule brevi subramoso, follls erecto-patentlbus
lanceolato-subulatis, apicibus obtusiusculis concolori-
bus, nervo crasso, seta exserta, capsula oblongo-ovata,

Caules dense pulvinati, vix duas lineas longi, simplices vel hic
dhc ramosi. Folia undique imbricata, ereeto-pateutia, sicci,
tate etiam s trid a , lanceolato-suhulata, canaliculata, apice ob,
tusa concolora, margine omnino integerrima; ¿w/èWara intense
nigro-fusca, superiora atro-viridia, omnia nervo crasso colore
nitensiore ad apicem percurrente prsdita. Seta bi-tri-linearis,
erecta, stricta. Capsula oblongo-ovata, viridi-fusoa, demiim
Bigra. Operculum conico-obtusum. Cah/ptra deest. Peri-
slomiumeàmtWms constans 16, latiusculis,'acutis, transversim
stnatis, flavicantibus, integerrimis, sed hic iHic prope apicem
linea media longitudinali.
The calyptra of this minute plant 1 have not myself seen. Its
discoverers have placed it among the Grimmia, where it maybe
placed near Gr. ouala, from which it is easily distinguished by its
lesser size, very dai'k colour, the obtuse and colourless points to
the leaves, with their thickened nerve and the narrow capsules,
which become black when the plant is past maturity. Indeed the
whole plant has a remarkably lurid aspect, and grows in dense
tufts, which are peculiarly even on their surface.
