o f Beaufort, has been obtained. R. S. means' the
fpecimens of Plants annually, in obedience to Sir
Hans Sloane’s will, prefented by the Company o f
Apothecaries to the Royal Society, part o f which
are depofited in the library belonging to that body,
in Somerfet Place, and the remainder in the Britiih
Mufeum.
On the authority o f various letters and Other
papers communicated by Michael Collinlbn, Efq;
many Plants are faid to have been introduced by
his father, Mr. Peter Collinfon, o f Mill Hill.
Mr. Knowlton, formerly Gardener to James She-
rard, M. D. at Eltham, gave a variety of ufeful
information, to which his name is always annexed*
He died in 1782, at the age of 90.
Mr. James Lee, nurferyman at the vineyard,
Hammerfmith, who remembers the gardens o f
Archibald duke o f Argyle, at Whitton, near
Hounilow, cultivated v/ith much care and liberal
cxpence, has furniihed the Author with a lift of the
Trees that were introduced by his Grace*
From his own memory the Author ftates feverai
Plants to have been cultivated by Mr. Ph. Miller,
in the Phyfick Garden at Chelfea, though no reference
is made to them in his Gardener’s Didionary.
Some Plants are by tradition known to have
been

been introduced by Robert James Lord Petre, hut
the times when are utterly forgot ; to remedy,
as much as poillble, this inconvenience, they are
always ftated as having been introduced before
1742, the time of his Lordihip’s death.
Mr. Miller, in his Didionary, often mentions
Plants as having been fent to him by Dr. Houftoun,
but he frequently omits the time when he received
them; thefe, therefore, are in like manner ftated
as having been introduced before the period of the
Dodor’s deceafe, which happened in 1733.
As the figure o f Calceolaria Fothergillii differs
a little from the defcription, it is neceifary to mention,
that the defcription was made in 1779, from
a weak Plant, the firft that flowered in England 5
and that the plate is from a drawing, taken fincc
the letter-prefs was printed, from a ftrong healthy
plant : hence it is alfo, that no reference is made
in the text to this figure.
