A ll plants that are not defcribed by either o f the
Linnceus’s have every fynonym o f careful writers,
that could be difcovered, annexed to them.
When the younger Linn^us was in England, in
i 7 81 and 17 8 2, he compofed a treatife on the Palms
and Liliaceous Plants, extradls of which, as far as
was thought likely to be ufeful to this Catalogue,
he communicated to the Author 3 this Manufcript
is quoted under the abbreviation of Linn. fil. His
death, which happened foOn after his return to
Sweden, prevented its publication; but it is in the
poifelTion o f Dr. James Edward Smith, of London,
as are alfo the libraries and colledions of both the
^Father and the Son.
References are frequently made to the works of
M . L ’Heritier, under Plants o f which he has not
yet publiihed either defcriptions or figures; thefe
are taken from communications this gentleman
frequently made, during the courfe o f printing, of
every thing he had prepared for the prefs. But, as
the public will in due time be put into poifeffion o f
the whole, little need be faid on this fubjed.
Throughout the whole of this Catalogue, an attempt
is made to trace back, as far as poifible, how
long each Plant has been cultivated in the Britiih
Gardens, and to fix, with as much precifion as the
aaturc of the fubjed would allow, the epoch of its
introdudion.
