Mr. Witmer Stone (P. Philad. Acad. 1902, p. 686) has examined the
type of Trichostoma umbratile of Strickland (Contr. Orn. 1849, p. 126,
pi. 22, hinder figure), and he finds that it is the same as the bird called
Rhinomyias pectoralis (Salvad.), which must be called R. umbratilis in
consequence. The bird named Aethostoma umbratile (antea, p. 38) will
therefore require a new name, which I propose should be A . tuitmeri,
after Mr. Witmer Stone, who made the above interesting identification.

Mr. Oberholser considers that Phylloscojpus of Boie is preceded by
Phyllopseuste of Meyer (Zusätze und Berichtigungen zu Meyer und
Wolfs Taschenbuch, p. 95); but I doubt whether this name was intended
to be used in a generic sense, as he quotes :■—“ Vierte Pamilie. Laubvögel.
Phyllopseustce,” just as his “ Dritte Pamilie, Vermivorce” included the
Hedge-Sparrow (Sylvia modularis).

Mr. Outram Bangs and Prof. J. A. Allen (in litt.) inform me that
this is not a distinct species, being founded on an example of P. gambeli
stained with burnt wood.

Dr. Stejneger (in litt.) points out that this species must stand as
S. varius, as the older name varius is of Bartram, not of Linnaeus, and
Bartram’s name, not being binomial, cannot take effect.
