myself, the rules stated in the Introduction preclude the insertion of a plate to hotter illustrate bis peculiar
colouring. The female with which this singularly tinted bird paired was of the ordinary type, possibly
young, if wo may trust to the statements of curtain authors, who describe the eyes of young females as hale]
and those of older birds us yellow.
The female previously referred to, and the two largest of her brood, are figured on the Elates; the woodcut
gives a correct representation of one of the favourite attitudes of the smallest and most helpless of the samn
family.
