vanity i f he fubjoins, that he confiders himfelf entitled to .the thanks o f his countrymen,
for obligations o f much higher and dearer pretenfions. H e has made it his' particular

H e requires o f his fcholars. (w ho are n ow augmented to the; n.umher o f ten) to y ie ld

T o maintain a ftridt cordiality among themfelves;
T o be more ready to amend their own failings than to expofe thofe o f their fellows ;
T o avoid with fcrupulous attention all indecent words and diihonourable aCtions;
T o cultivate a love o f truth, and entertain a modeft opinion o f their own merits; and

T o this general view o f d ie manner in which the prefent wo rk has been executed)
and o f the inftitution founded for the purpofe, the author has only to add his warmeft
acknowledgements to thofe illuftrious characters >vho have condefeended to honour the
prefent undertaking with their diftinguiihed patronage: His Holinefs the Pope, the
Emperor o f Germany, and the King o f Naples, have each o f them been gracioufly pleafed
to compliment himj with a Gold Medallion, engravings o f all which are given at the head
o f this Preface. And the Prince o f Orange, the Grand.' Duke o f Ruffia, and other
princes, as well as many perfons eminent in fcience and literature, have done him the
favour o f expreffing in the moft flattering manner the high fenfe which, they profefs
themfelves to entertain o f his various publications. I f he were to give thefe letters at
large he might perhaps be accufed o f oftentation; but whatever cenfure o f that nature
he may hazard from lighter minds, he thinks it a duty which he owes to a man o f
fcience not to fupprefs at leaft the very elegant teftimonies o f the- celebrated Baron
